The right pair of women’s knickers can be a real confidence booster. They can make your skin look smooth, and give you the support you need to feel great, whether you’re wearing a skirt or jeans. But it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the selection in stores and online, with a wide range of colors, fabrics, sizes and shapes. From a cutty sark (a risqué short style that originated in the 1700s) to high briefs, it’s important to have the right panties for every occasion and outfit.
To help, we asked the Strategist’s fashion editors about their favorite underwear and the best fabric for knickers. We also got input from fiber scientists at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab and gynecologists.A favorite for Strategist senior editor Chelsea Peng, these made-in-London knickers are soft and stretchy with an elastic waistband that gives her plenty of support. They’re also the perfect balance between Brazilian briefs and hipster panties, with lower sides than a bikini but not so low that they ride up under most dresses or skirts.Originally called bloomers, this vintage-inspired women’s panty style was popular in the 19th century. Today, women’s bloomers are sometimes called “Granny panties,” but they’re still a comfortable option when you need full coverage. They’re especially useful under tight-fitting skirts and pants because they give you more room in the front and back without feeling bulky.
