The OCS system enables the heart to be transported longer distances than can be accomplished with the traditional cold storage preservation technique, which may increase the pool of potential donors.

The OCS machine is designed to perform normothermic ex vivo heart perfusion with oxygenated and nutrient-supplemented donor blood. Its portable enclosure is designed to maintain the aortic flow and pressure at approximately 700-800 ml/min and 75 mmHg, respectively. The heart can be withdrawn and moved from the OCS tray for manipulation if necessary during transportation.

To collect the information needed for airbag deployment, the OCS system uses a number of sensors placed under the driver’s seat. The sensors identify the passenger size, whether a child seat is in use and whether the front-passenger seat has been occupied. This data is sent to the airbag module, which makes a decision about whether the passenger side airbag should be deployed.

A faulty sensor or a connection between the sensors and the OCS system can cause the airbags to fail to deploy during a crash, leading to serious injuries or even death. Typically, the airbag module will send a code B00A0 to the OCS system to indicate that there is an issue. This code indicates that there is a problem with one or more of the passenger-sensing sensors.
