Matter devices will work with each other regardless of what platform or ecosystem you use to control them, thanks to a feature called Multi-Admin. However, you will need a Matter controller to set up and manage your smart home. That could be an app, speaker or hub from one of the four big smart home platforms — Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomePod and Samsung SmartThings. It can also be a device like a router, TV or mobile phone with the right software.
Fortunately, many existing smart home products already have upgrade paths to Matter. If a product uses Wi-Fi, it can usually gain Matter compatibility with an over-the-air firmware update. For example, several Wi-Fi smart light bulbs from brands like Philips Hue, WiZ and Nanoleaf; and a smart lock from Lockly will all be upgraded to Matter with an update. And if a product uses a hub, it may be able to gain Matter support through its existing hub (like the Philips Hue Bridge and the Samsung SmartThings Gateway).
Some companies will also release new hubs that are both Matter controllers and bridges to other smart home standards.
