While there is no physical home button on iPhone XR, your phone has pre-programmed gestures to help you navigate your screen.
Using these gestures, you can also turn off your iPhone without buttons. In some models, you may need to press and hold the side button in addition to the volume up or down buttons until a slider appears.
1. Press and hold the Side button
When Apple removed the home button from iPhone X and other newer models, it made way for a slew of new gestures on the screen. It also redesigned how we use Siri and the Control Center.
To turn off your iPhone X or a newer model without the Home button, you can follow these steps:
Press and hold the Side button for a few seconds until it displays the slide to power off slider. Then, move the slider to the right to turn your phone off.
If the slider doesn’t appear, then you can try a few other things before turning your iPhone off. One option is to use the Settings app, which will let you restart your device. Another is to use professional iOS system recovery software, WooTechy iPhixer, which can help you fix any potential software glitches and restart your phone without causing data loss.
You can also use Assistive Touch to perform a few tasks on your device without the need for physical buttons. This feature works as a virtual button that allows you to open the power off slider, lock your screen, and more.
To turn on Assistive Touch, you’ll need to head over to the Settings app and tap on General. From here, scroll down to Accessibility and find Assistive Touch.
Once Assistive Touch is enabled, you can click on the circular Assistive Touch button and toggle it on. This will make Assistive Touch a default setting on your device, so that it will automatically open the power off slider, lock your screen, adjust volume, and more.
It can also be used to force restart your device if it’s not working normally. For this, you’ll need to press and hold the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons.
If you have a frozen or unresponsive phone, or if it won’t turn off by pressing and holding the buttons, there’s a good chance that you’ve got a damaged power button. Taking your device to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store or an independent service center can get it fixed, though. If you don’t have a Genius Bar near you, then you can still restart your device by using Assistive Touch or the Settings app on your iPhone if the power button isn’t working.
2. Press and hold the Volume Up button
Turning off your iPhone xr without buttons can be challenging at times. For example, if you have a broken Top or Side button, or the power button isn’t working at all, you might find it hard to restart your phone without using its touchscreen.
However, there are plenty of ways you can do this. One of the most straightforward is by using Assistive Touch, a feature that allows you to perform a variety of functions while your physical buttons aren’t working. You can lock your screen, open the Power Off slider, and even adjust volume with Assistive Touch on an iPhone xr without buttons.
To use Assistive Touch, simply open the Accessibility menu and enable Assistive Touch. Once enabled, you’ll see a toggle switch next to it. Tap it to open Assistive Touch.
Once Assistive Touch is on, you can open the iPhone’s Power Off slide by tapping it repeatedly. This will turn off your device with no physical buttons, but you’ll still be able to unlock your phone using Face ID.
Another option for turning off your iPhone xr without buttons is to press and hold the Volume Up and Side buttons simultaneously. This method requires a little more effort than pressing just the Volume Up or Side buttons, but it’s the most reliable way to turn off your iPhone if the Slide to Power Off slider doesn’t work.
If you have a locked iPhone xr and cannot reset it or restart it by pressing just the Power and Volume buttons, try performing a hard reset. This method will reset all your settings to their defaults and may fix most problems you have with the iPhone xr.
It’s also a good idea to update your iOS software, which may be fix some bugs and optimize some functions that are related to the problem you’re having with the iPhone xr.
If none of these methods work for you, consider contacting Apple and having them take a look at your iPhone. They’ll be able to tell you whether it’s hardware or software that’s causing the issue and what you can do about it.
3. Press and hold the Volume Down button
If the side button on your iPhone xr isn’t working, you can still turn off your phone by pressing and holding the Volume Down button. Just make sure to press it quickly and release it immediately afterward. If you press and hold the button too early, you might get a screenshot instead of turning your device off.
Another option to fix this problem is by resetting your iPhone. This is a quick and easy way to get rid of any bugs that are causing your device to not respond properly.
However, this method will also erase any data that you have on your device and may cause your iPhone to be unusable until the next time you restart it. So, it’s best to avoid this route if your iPhone XR’s screen is frozen and doesn’t react to taps or swipes.
The other option to fix this problem is by using Guided Access. This feature limits whoever is using your iPhone to the app that you are in and not allowing them to mess around with any other apps or settings.
To activate this feature, open the Settings app and go to Accessibility -> Touch -> AssistiveTouch. Once it’s on, a virtual button will appear on the display that lets you adjust volume with a simple tap or double tap.
This feature works a bit differently than most other iOS shortcuts, in that it gets the current volume and converts it to a number. It then shows a notification that explains what pressing a certain button will do, and it waits five seconds before it executes that action.
After that, the shortcut runs. Then it compares the new volume level to the number that the shortcut previously recorded. If the new volume level is greater, the shortcut will run Action A; if it’s less, the shortcut will run Action B.
There are several different methods to fix this issue, so be sure to try them one by one until your iPhone XR’s volume buttons start responding to press and taps. If none of these methods work, you may need to take your device to an authorized service center for a repair.
4. Press and hold the Side button again
The iPhone XR doesn’t have a Home button, but there are still plenty of ways to turn it off. First, there’s a power-off slider that you can press and hold until it appears on the screen. If that doesn’t work, you can try to hard reset your phone.
You can also get to the general Settings app on your device. Then, scroll down and look for Shut Down in the list of options.
Once you’ve found this option, slide the slider to the right to start the shutdown process. Once it’s complete, your iPhone XR will shut down and you can start using it again.
If your screen is frozen, you may need to do a hard reset or force restart to get it working again. The hard reset can take a while to work, but it’s worth the effort if your phone is freezing and you need to use it.
The side button on the iPhone XR has a lot of functions, like triggering Siri or activating Assistive Touch. Before the XR, you only needed to press and hold the Sleep/Wake button to wake the phone up.
When Apple removed the Home button, it had to add a few more things to the Side button. So now, it can trigger Siri, activate Assistive Touch, and even open Apple Pay.
That makes it easier for people to use the phone when they’re not physically touching it. It’s also an important feature for people who have physical disabilities.
There are several ways to turn off the iPhone XR without using buttons, but one of the easiest is to press and hold the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons simultaneously. You can do this from the Settings app or manually by pressing and holding those two buttons until the shutdown screen appears on the screen.
The only problem with this method is that you might accidentally activate the Emergency SOS function, which is something you definitely don’t want to do if you’re just trying to turn off your phone. Another way to avoid this is by pressing and holding the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons first, then the Side button.
