Breast augmentation can change the size and shape of your breasts. It might improve your body image and self-confidence. But it is important to keep your expectations realistic.

Before the procedure, you and your surgeon will discuss your motivation and goals. You should be honest about your reasons and ask for information about the risks, benefits, and alternatives to surgery.

The operation can be done as an outpatient or you may stay overnight in hospital. You will be given general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a cut alongside your breast, either above the pectoralis muscle or under it (depending on how much enlargement you want). Then he or she puts an implant into a pocket in the skin. It may be filled with saline or silicone gel. The surgeon may also move or reshape your areola, or remove dark skin around it (nipple reduction). The whole process takes 1 to 2 hours.

After your surgery, a bulky gauze dressing will be wrapped around your breasts and chest. You might have drainage tubes attached, which will be removed after 3 days. You should massage your breasts regularly starting 5 days after the operation. This helps prevent a hardening of the capsule that surrounds your implant.

Some women with breast implants have systemic symptoms that make it harder to think and concentrate, or feel tired. The cause is not known, but it could be linked to the implants. If you have breast implants, you should talk to your doctor if you have these symptoms. Augmentation Mammoplasty
